In these monthly “readings,” I find meaning in each month’s astrological positioning and connect it to the physical body and my intuitive take on the universal energy. My goal is to help find guidance, and understanding as a collective. Each month is applicable to everyone.
The Stars
The sign of Leo is ruled by the sun, flowing from July 23rd to August 22nd. During this period of time, Leo allows you to express your personality—both the positive and negative sides—while also encouraging you to release the shadows of your lower self. These lower shadows are produced by your Ego and are not centered with your heart energy.
The Body
In the body, the heart and spinal cord are governed by Leo. Just as the heart pumps life through your body by supplying oxygenated blood and nutrients, the heart energy is about shining out one’s true essence for all to see.
Leo also governs the spinal cord, which connects the brain and the body. Your heart center—your true personal essence—is the first point in connecting to a higher power. Allow your heart to drive the decision-making process. Your ego-brain functions best in service to the heart as opposed to controlling it. Don’t overthink things. Use the ability of the mind to navigate and solve problems, only once your heart has made a decision.
Four Tips for This Cycle
- Awareness: Use this cycle to be aware of the balance between your heart and head. Shine your unique energy and personality out to the world.
- Inspiration: Be committed to leading with power, love and wisdom.
- Action: Practice the Lotus Mudra (instructions below). The Lotus Mudra is a symbol of purity, perseverance and potential. Picture it as light and beauty emerging from darkness. Practicing the Lotus Mudra provides an opportunity to feel grounded and strong, while opening our heart to the joys of life. It is believed to release tension & calm the mind and is a reminder of the beauty and grace within us.
- Balance: Alternate nostril breathing—a very relaxed, balancing breath that is used to help calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and promote concentration (instructions below).
Lotus Mudra
- Bring your hands together into prayer (Anjali Mudra) at your heart center.
- Keeping the base of the palms, thumbs and little fingers together, gently unfurl the index, middle and ring fingers like the lotus flower opening to the sun (see image).
Alternate Nostril Breathing
- To start, empty all the air from your lungs. Using the thumb of your dominant hand, block your right nostril and inhale through your left nostril only. Be sure to inhale into your belly, not your chest.
- Once you are full of breath, seal your left nostril with the ring finger of the same hand, keeping your right nostril closed, and hold the breath for a moment.
- Then release your thumb and exhale through your right nostril only. Be sure to exhale all the breath out of the right side and pause before inhaling again through the same side. Seal both nostrils once you’ve inhaled on the right side and exhaled through the left side.
- A complete cycle of breath includes an inhalation and exhalation through both nostrils.
- If you’re just starting out, you can do a four-count inhale, holding your breath for four to eight counts, then exhale for four counts. Perform up to ten cycles and notice how your body responds.
